PA Health & Wellness Blog: Importance of Staying Hydrated

Staying hydrated is one of the easiest things you can do to stay healthy. The average person should drink at least eight glasses of water a day. But even if water isn’t your favorite beverage, there are still a lot of ways to up your daily intake.

Drinking fruit and vegetable juices, milk and tea can add to your daily water intake. Even coffee, soda and sports drinks can help. Foods like melons, lettuce and soup broths can also keep you hydrated. And while these things help, water is still the most important factor.

It’s even more important for young children and older adults to stay hydrated. One trick to staying hydrated is to keep a bottle of water with you throughout the day. Easy ways to increase your water intake are to drink water first thing in the morning, at meal times and before you go to sleep.

According to Family Doctor, signs of dehydration include; little or no urine, darker urine, dry mouth, sleepiness, extreme thirst, headache, confusion and dizziness.

Beyond the dangers of dehydration, drinking more water can also prevent these health issues:

  • Dry mouth – Drinking water prevents dry mouth – which causes bad breath, difficulty chewing and speaking, sore throat and a changed sense of taste.
  • Sore joints and muscles – Water loosens bones and joints, which helps with aches and pains. Think about it like watering a plant where the soil has dried up, it takes a while to rehydrate. Your joints work the same way.
  • Appetite – Drinking water can help satisfy hunger. In fact, many confuse thirst with hunger. Next time you want an afternoon snack, try having a glass of water instead. Water won’t replace a meal, but it can suppress hunger.

At PA Health & Wellness, we know it’s easy to take water for granted – so don’t forget to drink up.
