Accessibility Benefits Everyone

Date: 06/10/18

At PA Health & Wellness, we focus on helping those who need us most. Many of our participants are living with a disability.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states, “one out of every five adults has a disability.” The most common challenge is physical movement.

These challenges can affect relationships, education, health, and careers. One of the most common problems people with disabilities face is transportation access. Those who live in cities have access to public transportation like the bus or a train. However, people who live in more rural communities have little to no access.

Even though a lot of work completed by the Americans with Disabilities Act, people still face important accessibility challenges.

Access for people with disabilities improves access for everyone. For an example, putting ramps in will be beneficial. By making public places physically accessible for people with disabilities also makes them more accessible for people who may not have disabilities, including families with baby strollers, bicycle riders and skateboarders.

For more information about things that you can do to support community access, consider reaching out to your local Centers for Independent Living (CILs). These organizations work with many communities to help make them more accessible.

PA Health & Wellness helps qualifying older adults and persons with disabilities access our non-medical transportation benefit. This might include bus token or mileage reimbursement to get to community and other activities using accessible transporation.
